Us: The Meaning Behind Each Doppelganger's Name

JASON WILSON/PLUTO - EVAN ALEX

The second breakout star of Us was young Evan Alex, who played the Adelaide and Gabe's son, Jason. Alex also portrayed Jason's tethered doppelganger, Pluto. In Greek mythology, Pluto is the ruler of the Underworld. He's a much more positive-looking figure compared to Hades, who is also described as the king of the Underworld. Pluto himself seemed less dangerous than the rest of the Tethered in their early encounter, but the young boy had an animal-like behavior which could mean his name came from Pluto the dog. It seems possible that the Disney cartoon served as a memory to Red during her childhood and she gave her youngest child that name.
There's no question that Jordan Peele uses a multitude of horror movies, TV shows, and novel stories as influences for his projects. Besides the horror Easter eggs hiding in plain sight throughout the Us movie, Jason himself was a nod to the classic horror movie genre. Disregarding his behavior, his name is Jason and he wears a mask for the majority of the movie. This is most likely paying homage to one of horror's most iconic slasher killers: Jason Voorhees, from the Friday the 13th franchise.

KITTY TYLER/DAHLIA - ELISABETH MOSS

Elisabeth Moss plays the matriarch of the Tyler family, Kitty. They are friends of the Wilson family and invite them for a beach day at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, which really kickstarts the events of the whole movie. Kitty herself is a very talkative and social woman. She reveals to Adelaide that she recently got work done on her face to keep her looking young. Kitty also shares with Adelaide that she always dreamed of becoming an actress, which is around the time when Adelaide revealed one of the first hints to Us' twist.

Kitty's tethered doppelganger is coincidentally named Dahlia, seemingly linked to the infamous murder of aspiring actress Elizabeth Short. The young actress was killed in Los Angeles during the 1940s and was known as the Black Dahlia (who was partly the focus of TNT's recent I Am The Night miniseries). In Us, Dahlia eerily smiles a lot and even cuts her own face similar to the wounds found on the Black Dahlia's face.

JOSH TYLER/TEX - TIM HEIDECKER

Tim Heidecker portrays Josh Tyler, the patriarch of the family. From early impressions, he doesn't seem very involved in his family. Josh seems more like the breadwinner who is primarily caught up with his material things and elaborate lifestyle. Josh's doppelganger is fittingly named Tex. Everything is bigger in Texas, right? The same mindset goes for Josh and his Tethered's behavior. Gabe is constantly hearing about Josh's massive house, new car, and his big boat (all of which end up helping the Wilson family escape their Tethered doppelgangers). Josh is a bigshot and Tex's demeanor eerily matches that notion after he goes after Gabe. Tex is no match for Gabe, however, as the doppelganger is still killed after Gabe's failed flare gun attempt.
